Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

The only cancer treatment center in the region that performs hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy

Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment option for patients with peritoneal spread of cancers arising from the appendix, colon and stomach, peritoneal mesothelioma and primary peritoneal malignancy.

HIPEC is the chemotherapy component of a surgical procedure called Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) involving the removal of all the tumor masses and the affected abdominal wall lining (peritoneum) in the operating room. The surgery is immediately followed by the delivery of heated chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity via special catheters and heated perfusion pumps.

The chemotherapy agents are allowed to bathe the abdominal cavity for up to 90 minutes. Then, they are removed and the abdomen is flushed out with sterile solution.

For certain types of appendiceal cancer, cytosurgery with HIPEC is the only treatment required to adequately treat the cancer.
